The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally sought feedback from all 10 IPL franchises on the controversial Impact Player rule, with August 31 set as the deadline for responses. The development has opened the possibility of the regulation being scrapped ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The BCCI and IPL management have contacted the franchises as part of a broader review of key cricket operations.

Teams have been asked to discuss the relevant matters with their respective cricket operations departments before submitting consolidated feedback to the board. “As discussed in the IPL 2026 Captains’ Meeting, it was agreed that feedback would be collected from all franchises at the conclusion of the tournament on key cricket operations matters,” the BCCI/IPL communication stated, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Introduced in IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule allows each team to substitute one player during a match. The regulation has given captains greater tactical flexibility, enabling them to strengthen either their batting or bowling attack depending on the match situation.

However, the rule has remained a divisive topic. Critics argue that it reduces the importance of all-rounders and puts additional pressure on bowlers, particularly in an era where high-scoring games have become increasingly common. During IPL 2026, matches featuring totals of more than 250 runs became a regular occurrence, further intensifying the debate around the rule.

Several high-profile Indian captains and players, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill, have previously expressed reservations about the Impact Player regulation. Their opposition has added significant weight to calls for the BCCI to reassess its future.

The franchise feedback, however, is not limited to the Impact Player rule. The BCCI has also asked teams to provide their views on Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) concerns, umpiring standards, practice session arrangements and playing conditions. The PMOA issue gained prominence during IPL 2026 after anti-corruption regulations were breached when unauthorised individuals were found inside the restricted area. The incidents prompted the BCCI to issue additional guidelines to franchises during the season.

At the IPL 2026 pre-season Captains’ Meeting, the BCCI had indicated that the Impact Player rule would remain for at least another season. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later confirmed that the regulation would undergo a comprehensive review after the 2026 tournament.

Reports in June suggested that the board was already considering whether to abolish the rule before IPL 2027, while franchises were also reassessing their positions. With the latest communication, the review has now formally begun. The final decision on whether the Impact Player rule is retained, modified or removed will depend on the feedback received from franchises and subsequent BCCI deliberations. No official decision timeline has been announced yet.
