Former India captain Rohit Sharma’s ODI future is expected to be one of the biggest talking points at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3. The high-profile meeting will bring together head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence (CoE) head VVS Laxman at the BCCI headquarters.
India’s current captains, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, are also likely to attend the meeting, along with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and president Mithun Manhas. Among several issues on the agenda, Rohit’s position in India’s ODI plans is expected to attract significant attention.
There has been considerable uncertainty over whether Rohit Sharma remains part of India’s plans for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Earlier reports suggested that the selectors were not keen on taking the veteran opener to the tournament and that his ODI appearance at Lord’s could potentially be his final game.

However, the BCCI subsequently denied those reports, leaving Rohit’s international future unclear. The review meeting could now provide greater clarity on whether the 38-year-old remains in the selectors’ plans. Another key question will be whether Rohit is considered for India’s upcoming home ODI series against the West Indies.
The meeting will also assess India’s recent performances, particularly their struggles in white-ball cricket. The reigning T20 World Cup champions failed to win any of their six completed T20Is during the tours of Ireland and England in June 2026. India subsequently lost the ODI series in England before recovering with a T20I series victory in Zimbabwe.

The team’s recent Test results are also likely to come under scrutiny. India won the opening Test against Sri Lanka but were held to a draw in the second match, adding further importance to the review.
India’s demanding upcoming schedule will be another major discussion point. The team are set to play five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests during their multi-format tour of New Zealand. The two-Test series will be particularly important for India’s World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign.

India currently occupy fifth position in the WTC points table and reportedly need to win at least five of their remaining seven Tests to keep their qualification hopes alive. After New Zealand, India will host Australia for a five-Test series, leaving little room for further setbacks.
The futures of Agarkar and Laxman could also be discussed. Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector is nearing its end, while Laxman has been linked with a potential expanded role overseeing both the CoE and the national team. Although there is no official confirmation, the Mumbai meeting could offer important clarity on both positions.
