The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken major decisions following Pakistan’s humiliating 194-run defeat against England in the second Test of the ongoing three-match series. With the team struggling badly, the PCB has dropped seven players from the squad and also parted ways with Test head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul.

Ahead of the third Test in Birmingham, scheduled to begin on September 9, Pakistan have made wholesale changes to their squad. The PCB has also begun strengthening its coaching setup, advertising for a new fielding coach for both the red-ball and white-ball teams. The fielding coach position has been vacant since Shane McDermott resigned in July 2026, shortly before Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies for a two-Test series.

“The PCB is seeking an experienced and skilled fielding coach to join the Pakistan men’s national cricket team. The fielding coach will play a crucial role in developing and enhancing the fielding skills of Pakistan national team players,” the job description read. The PCB has outlined 10 requirements covering education, experience and key competencies for the position, highlighting its intention to bring in an experienced professional.

Pakistan’s Test setup is currently undergoing a significant overhaul. Following Sarfaraz Ahmed’s departure, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has been handed additional responsibility and will take charge of the Test side for the remainder of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

The PCB has also brought seven players into the Test squad for the Birmingham match. Five of those additions are yet to represent Pakistan at the international level. The changes come after Pakistan’s disappointing performances in the first two Tests. Their batting unit struggled throughout the series, failing to cross the 200-run mark in either match.

As a result, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Khurram Shahzad, Aamer Jamal and Awais Zafar have been dropped ahead of the third Test. Pakistan will now look to its revamped squad and new leadership structure to produce a strong response in Birmingham and prevent England from completing a series sweep.
