Hampshire have withdrawn New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn from their squad for the remainder of the County Championship season following strong criticism over his inclusion in their recent Division One fixture against Warwickshire. Kuggeleijn, 34, was initially named in Hampshire’s 15-member squad for the match at the Utilita Bowl. The club had planned to make the New Zealand international available for their final four County Championship matches as they continue their fight to secure their Division One status.

However, his selection attracted considerable criticism on social media, with supporters questioning Hampshire’s decision to sign the pace-bowling all-rounder because of his legal history. Hampshire reversed their decision before Wednesday’s play, confirming that Kuggeleijn would no longer represent the club. The county side said it had reflected on the situation and listened to feedback from both staff and supporters.

“Having reflected and listened to feedback from our staff and supporters, Hampshire Cricket can confirm that Scott Kuggeleijn will not represent the club,” the club said in a statement.

Hampshire also thanked supporters who shared their views and urged fans to unite behind the team for the final four County Championship fixtures of the season. Kuggeleijn was charged with rape in 2015 and was acquitted in 2017 after a retrial was ordered following a hung jury. He has consistently maintained his innocence.

The 34-year-old has represented New Zealand across all three international formats, playing three Tests, two ODIs and 18 T20Is. He has spent much of his domestic career with Northern Districts.

Hampshire head coach Russell Domingo declined to discuss the matter in detail, saying the club had already addressed the situation through its statement. “There’s a lot happening,” Domingo said. “The club has put out a statement and has dealt with it. It is not my place to be commenting on it. We need to move forward.” Hampshire now have four County Championship matches remaining as they battle to retain their place in Division One.
