Fresh details have emerged about the Indian men’s selection committee’s reported decision to move on from Rohit Sharma during India’s England tour earlier this year. According to reports, the selectors had informed the veteran opener that he was no longer part of their “scheme of things” as they looked to build a younger ODI setup ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The selection committee was reportedly keen to give opportunities to younger batters, with Yashasvi Jaiswal among the players being considered for a greater role in India’s ODI plans. Rohit, however, remained determined to continue representing India at the international level and had also worked on his fitness to remain available for selection.

According to news agency PTI, Rohit was unhappy with the selectors’ decision but eventually accepted the situation. The development came amid growing uncertainty over his ODI future and his role in India’s plans for the next World Cup cycle.

Speculation intensified when reports claimed that the third ODI between India and England at Lord’s on July 19 could be Rohit Sharma’s final international appearance. The reports triggered a strong reaction among Indian cricket fans and across social media.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently dismissed those claims, stating that Rohit would continue playing for India as long as he remained part of the team’s plans.

Amid the mounting scrutiny, Rohit Sharma responded in the best possible manner—with the bat. The 39-year-old produced a memorable century, temporarily pushing retirement discussions into the background. The BCCI also released a video featuring Rohit addressing the speculation surrounding his future. Calling the constant discussion “noise”, Rohit made it clear that his priority remains performing for India.

“Look, my job is with the bat. Come and play, represent my country, represent the team. That’s what I’ve been told to do since I made my debut, so that’s what I’m going to do,” Rohit Sharma said.
