The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeking permission to document the Mumbai senior team’s entire 2026-27 domestic season. If approved, the ambitious project would make MCA the first state cricket association in India to document an entire domestic campaign in this manner.
MCA executives recently met BCCI CEO Hemang Amin to discuss the proposal and seek the necessary clearances. The association is considering a production inspired by The Test, the popular Amazon Prime Video documentary series that offered viewers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at the Australian cricket team. MCA president Ajinkya Naik confirmed that discussions with the BCCI are underway and explained the vision behind the project.
“Whether it takes the form of a web series or a documentary will be decided as we progress, but the idea is to give fans a unique look at what goes on behind the scenes with the Mumbai team throughout the season,” Ajinkya Naik told The Indian Express.

The BCCI’s response is still awaited, although the MCA remains hopeful of receiving approval. The association wants cameras to follow the Mumbai senior team from the beginning of its Ranji Trophy preparations through to the final match of the domestic season.
Naik believes the project would provide an opportunity to showcase Mumbai’s remarkable legacy in Indian domestic cricket. The team has won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times, making it the most successful side in the tournament’s history.

“We want to capture the journey from Day 1 of our senior team’s preparations for the Ranji Trophy right through to the final match of the season,” Ajinkya Naik said. “Mumbai cricket has such a rich heritage, and we felt, ‘why not showcase it to the world?’ Let people see what goes into the making of a 42-time Ranji Trophy champion side,” he added.
The proposed documentary would not be restricted to the Ranji Trophy. The 2026-27 domestic calendar also features the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, giving the production team an opportunity to cover Mumbai cricket across multiple formats. The MCA is also planning to commercialise the project by offering the finished documentary or web series to OTT platforms. However, no production company or streaming partner has been officially announced yet.

The Ranji Trophy schedule provides a defined timeline for filming, with the first phase scheduled from October 11 to November 5, followed by the second phase from January 17 to February 4. The knockout stage will run from February 9 to March 3. The project remains subject to BCCI approval, meaning filming cannot officially begin until the board grants the required permissions.
