East Zone captain Ishan Kishan produced a commanding batting performance in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone, scoring a brilliant double century to put his team in a dominant position. The left-handed batter continued his impressive run of form in domestic cricket, delivering a composed innings when his side needed it most on Monday, September 7. Kishan resumed Day 2 unbeaten on 111 and showed excellent temperament as he built his innings on a batting-friendly surface at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the East Zone skipper played the ball on its merit and steadily moved towards the landmark. He completed his double century in 270 balls, underlining the patience and control behind one of his finest domestic innings. His marathon knock came on a flat Chepauk pitch where the first-innings lead could become crucial in deciding the outcome of the final.
The East Zone captain initially shared a substantial partnership with young wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra before combining with Anukul Roy. Their contributions helped East Zone cross the 500-run mark during the second session of Day 2 and put South Zone under increasing pressure.

Kishan’s innings was particularly impressive for its maturity and consistency. The left-hander has enjoyed a significant resurgence in domestic cricket over the past couple of years, and his performance in Chennai once again highlighted his ability to build a long innings while keeping the scoreboard moving.
He smashed 25 fours and two sixes during his double-century knock, reaching the landmark in the 122nd over as East Zone moved to 550/5. His ability to find gaps regularly ensured that South Zone struggled to build sustained pressure. The Chepauk surface has offered excellent conditions for batting, with several players from East Zone making significant contributions. Apart from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 44, and Sudip Gharami, who made six, every East Zone batter had managed to score at least a half-century.

South Zone captain Tilak Varma found it difficult to contain the scoring rate. Defensive field placements allowed East Zone’s batters to rotate the strike and find boundaries, while the pressure created by the top order made it difficult for South Zone to respond aggressively.
Kishan, in particular, capitalised on the freedom available to him. His pull shot was a major weapon throughout the innings, accounting for 11 of his 25 boundaries. He eventually completed his double century with a well-timed square cut, joining the elite group of batters to achieve the milestone in Duleep Trophy history.

With East Zone already in a commanding position, the team could look to push its total towards the 600-650 range before declaring. The side also has a strong bowling attack, with experienced pacers Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar expected to spearhead the attack once South Zone begin their first innings.
