Kevin Pietersen is set to make a surprise return to the England set-up, joining Brendon McCullum’s coaching staff as a specialist mentor for the white-ball teams. The former England captain will begin his new role later this month, marking his first official association with the national side since his international playing career ended controversially in 2014.
Pietersen’s appointment comes with England preparing for next year’s 50-over World Cup in South Africa. His first assignment will be the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs. The former batter brings considerable experience to McCullum’s set-up, having previously worked as a mentor with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.
Pietersen also had a brief stint working with England’s batters during their ODI series in South Africa in early 2023. However, his latest return represents a significant development given his stature in English cricket and his previous differences with the current coaching regime.

Since retiring from international cricket, Kevin Pietersen has largely worked as a broadcaster. He was also critical of McCullum’s England environment during the team’s tour of India in early 2025, with McCullum rejecting those comments as “factually incorrect”. Despite that history, Pietersen is now looking forward to working alongside McCullum and helping England’s white-ball players prepare for their World Cup campaign.
