English county side Leicestershire have been charged with an alleged breach of pitch regulations following their low-scoring County Championship clash against Glamorgan at Grace Road. The Cricket Regulator, an independent body established by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), announced the charge on Tuesday after concerns were raised over the playing surface.

The match ended inside four days, with Leicestershire securing victory. Following the game, match referee Ian Ramage requested an inspection of the pitch by Andy Mackay, the ECB’s pitch and grounds advisor. The surface reportedly featured uneven grass and substantially inconsistent bounce, making batting particularly difficult throughout the contest.

Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson described the conditions as challenging and suggested that the ball behaved unpredictably from the opening delivery.

“The ball seamed from ball one, and went up and down, so it was a tough one for the batters to play on.” Dawson also pointed to an incident involving Ben Kellaway, who was dismissed twice after deliveries behaved unexpectedly. “I’m not here to make decisions about the pitch but, as you say, people got hit. Ben Kellaway got two dismissals in the game that were completely out of his control.”

However, Leicestershire head coach Alfonso Thomas defended the surface after the match. He highlighted the fact that neither innings lasted fewer than 50 overs and two batters managed to score in the 90s.

Thomas acknowledged that the pitch was drier than expected, reportedly because the venue had hosted a film shoot before the match. Cricinfo reported that the production was a Bollywood biopic, adding an unusual twist to the controversy.

“A couple of batters showed that if you applied yourself, and didn’t just wait for the ball to go up and down, you could make runs.” Thomas also rejected suggestions that the pitch was unsafe, pointing out that no player required hospital treatment. “As for any suggestion that it was unsafe, no one went to hospital.”

The Cricket Regulator’s decision could have significant consequences for Leicestershire’s fight to remain in the top tier of county cricket. The victory earned them 19 valuable points, but those points could be deducted if the pitch is ultimately rated “below average” or worse. With their top-flight survival potentially at stake, the outcome of the regulatory process could prove just as important as the result on the field.
