New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner believes India have the quality and variety required to perform strongly in the upcoming two-Test series, despite the challenges posed by early-season conditions in New Zealand. The series, part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, will begin with the first Test in Wellington from November 19 to 23. The second Test is scheduled in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1.

Santner identified adapting quickly to the local conditions as India’s biggest challenge. New Zealand pitches during October and November can behave differently compared to those seen later in the season, with greater movement expected for seam and swing bowlers. However, the New Zealand all-rounder pointed out that several members of India’s squad have previous experience of playing in the country and understand what is required to succeed.

“I think it has always been a challenge. They always play the best teams, and then having to adapt to the conditions quickly is the main thing. But they have got all bases covered.” Mitchell Santner added that India’s previous experience could prove valuable when they arrive for the series. “A few players have been there before and done well. In October-November, the pitches can play differently compared to February-March. The first thing is to try and understand the conditions as quickly as possible.”

The conditions are expected to place considerable importance on India’s fast-bowling attack. Santner believes the visitors have the personnel needed to exploit movement with the new ball, particularly with Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack. He also highlighted Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, giving India a combination that offers different bowling styles and options.

“(Jasprit) Bumrah leading the attack and being able to nip and swing the ball will hold the key. (Mohammed) Siraj has done it for a long time as well and (Prasidh) Krishna is obviously bowling well. There is a lot of variety, which is what you need.” While New Zealand is traditionally viewed as a seam-friendly destination, Santner does not believe spinners will be irrelevant during the two Tests. He expects spin to become more influential as matches progress and pitches begin to deteriorate.

India’s spin options could therefore have an important role to play, particularly on the fourth and fifth days. Santner singled out Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja as two players capable of contributing in such conditions. Suthar’s recent performances have strengthened his case, while Jadeja brings extensive international experience and the ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

“I think there is still a role for a spinner in NZ, especially in Tests alongside the quicks, whether it is first or second innings when the pitch might be holding up.” Mitchell Santner believes the pitch could offer increasing assistance to spin as the Test progresses.

“On days four and five, it could spin a bit. Whether it is (Ravindra) Jadeja or Suthar, both are very good options.” With India possessing a strong pace attack and multiple spin options, Santner expects the visitors to have all the necessary resources. The key, however, will be how quickly India adapt to New Zealand’s early-season conditions.
