The Big Bash League is set to enter a new chapter on December 12, 2026, when Melbourne Renegades face Perth Scorchers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The fixture will mark the first-ever Big Bash League match to be played outside Australia and will open the 16th edition of the tournament. The Renegades have been confirmed as the designated home side for the historic clash.

Melbourne Renegades fast bowler Brendan Doggett expressed his excitement after arriving in Chennai and getting the opportunity to experience the iconic venue ahead of the match.

“I just arrived in Chennai today, which is really exciting. Coming through the change rooms, you get to see so much of the history that’s been created in and around this ground, and everything that’s happened here. So, it’s a real honour to be here and a real privilege to have the opportunity to play a Big Bash game here in December. It’s really exciting,” Brendan Doggett said, as quoted by The News Mill.

Doggett also believes the Chennai fixture will provide the Renegades with an important opportunity to experience Indian conditions. The franchise has endured a difficult run in recent BBL seasons but is now looking to build around a younger squad.

“We’ve probably struggled a little bit over the last few BBL seasons, so there’s been a bit of a rebuild. I think we’re building a really good young squad, and this is going to be a great opportunity for us to come over here and experience these conditions,” he said.

He added that the team would rely on players with IPL experience when preparing for the Chennai surface and planning their tactics. Phil Rigby, the Big Bash League’s Head of Business Operations, also welcomed the competition’s move to India. He thanked the BCCI for its support and said organisers were eager to create a memorable experience for cricket fans in Chennai.

“We’re heading into our 16th season of the Big Bash League, and it’s incredibly exciting to announce that we’ll be playing the opening game of the season here in Chennai,” Rigby said. “We’re looking forward to sharing the Big Bash experience with all of you and making it a really special occasion. So, keep an eye out for tickets going on sale in early October. We can’t wait to see you there!” he added.

The Chennai opener is part of a 44-match BBL|16 season running from December 12 to January 26.
