Delhi Capitals and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel has reportedly been granted bail after spending more than a month in custody in connection with a criminal case involving serious allegations. Porel was arrested on August 11 following a complaint filed by a young medical student at Magra Police Station. The complainant alleged that Porel had sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage and subsequently threatened to circulate intimate photographs of her.

Police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The charges reportedly included several non-bailable provisions relating to sexual offences, harassment, criminal intimidation and alleged misuse of electronic material.

The case was also heard at the Calcutta High Court, where Magra Police informed Justice Sougat Bhattacharyya about Porel’s arrest. He was subsequently produced before the Chinsurah court, which directed authorities to examine electronic devices reportedly in his possession as part of the investigation.

The complainant had approached the police several days before Porel’s arrest, making allegations that included sexual relations allegedly obtained on the promise of marriage, harassment and threats involving intimate photographs.

Abhishek Porel denied the allegations before his arrest. Police also reportedly arrested another individual connected to the case, as well as the complainant, although the circumstances and allegations involving those arrests are separate matters.

According to the ABP Ananda report, the Chinsurah court granted Porel bail on Thursday. However, his release from custody is expected to take another day because of the required formalities.

If the process proceeds as reported, Porel could walk out of jail on Friday. The allegations against Porel remain matters for the legal process, and the reported grant of bail does not amount to a finding on the merits of the case. Any further developments will depend on the ongoing proceedings and investigation.
