Former India batter Pravin Amre believes teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the potential to make a major impact in Test cricket and could eventually follow a path similar to Virender Sehwag. The 15-year-old has already made headlines with his aggressive batting in white-ball cricket. After a remarkable IPL 2026 campaign, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to represent India in T20Is during the England series in July.

He then created another record by becoming the youngest player to score a T20I half-century during the subsequent series against Zimbabwe. Despite his success in the shorter formats, questions have been raised about whether Sooryavanshi can adapt his attacking style to red-ball cricket. Amre, however, believes the youngster should not alter his natural approach. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he compared Sooryavanshi’s potential to that of Sehwag, who also faced doubts early in his Test career.

“He shouldn’t change his game; he has to play the way he plays. He is a special talent; with maturity he can be like Virender Sehwag. When he started, people doubted Sehwag; he is the one who got a triple century in Test matches.”

Amre also stressed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should focus on spending time at the crease rather than worrying about the number of runs he scores. “He has to focus on playing 100 balls and not think about runs. We played in an era when we had to play 300 balls to get a hundred. We worked with Shreyas Iyer to play 150 balls to get a hundred. Sooryavanshi has to think of playing 100 balls; he can get a hundred, even a double hundred. Playing 100 balls is important.”

Former India batter Dilip Vengsarkar has also backed Sooryavanshi’s red-ball prospects. The teenager played an important role in East Zone’s successful Duleep Trophy 2026 campaign, scoring 92 off 81 balls in the semifinal against Central Zone. Vengsarkar questioned why the youngster’s ability should be judged differently across formats.

“I don’t understand why they make such an issue of white and red ball? He is playing so brilliantly in white ball, why can’t he play red-ball cricket, or pink-ball cricket for that matter? It is a matter of how you adjust; he is an excellent player with excellent skills also. I am sure he will do it.”

Sooryavanshi also became the youngest player to score a Duleep Trophy half-century during East Zone’s semifinal victory.
