Sam Konstas may be just 20, but the Australian opener has already experienced the intense spotlight that comes with international cricket. His Test debut against India during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy made him an instant talking point, particularly after he took an aggressive approach against Jasprit Bumrah.

Konstas made his Test debut in Melbourne and showed no hesitation against one of the world’s leading fast bowlers. Rather than allowing Bumrah to settle into his rhythm, the young opener attacked from the outset. He eventually scored a 60 off 65 deliveries, playing a crucial role in Australia’s victory in the Test.

One of the defining moments of Konstas’ innings came when he attempted a reverse ramp against Bumrah and cleared the boundary for six. The audacious shot brought an end to a remarkable sequence for the Indian fast bowler, who had gone 4,483 deliveries without conceding a six in Test cricket.

For Sam Konstas, however, the moment was less about breaking a statistical milestone and more about enjoying his first Test appearance. “I can’t remember, but I was having a lot of fun. It was quite surreal and a lot of things happened in that moment,” Konstas told TOI while reflecting on his memorable debut.

He also acknowledged the challenge of facing Bumrah, describing him as “the best bowler in the world” and admitting that taking him on was a difficult task.

Konstas’ debut also featured an on-field exchange with former India captain Virat Kohli. The pair were involved in a shoulder-to-shoulder incident during the opening session, followed by a brief exchange of words. The incident generated significant attention, but Sam Konstas later played down any suggestion of lasting tension between the two players.

“He just shouldered me and then we moved on. It’s all part of the game. After the match, he wished me all the best for the future,” Sam Konstas said.

The Australian youngster is now focused on his development and is currently part of the Australia A squad in India. Although his recent performances have not necessarily translated into impressive numbers, Konstas remains confident about his form and ability.

Asked about his current form, the 20-year-old offered a short but confident response. “I am in very good form, pretty much smashing them,” he said. After making headlines with an eye-catching Test debut, Konstas will hope his Australia A stint in India helps him regain momentum and strengthens his case for another opportunity at the international level.
