Mumbai Indians have appointed Australian coach Luke Williams as their new head coach ahead of the 2027 Women’s Premier League (WPL) season. Williams takes over from Lisa Keightley, who has decided to step away from the role after guiding the franchise through the previous campaign.
Williams arrives at Mumbai Indians after a landmark 2026 season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he coached the franchise to their maiden WPL title. He will now take charge of a Mumbai side that has already lifted the trophy twice and will work closely with captain Harmanpreet Kaur as preparations begin for the fifth edition of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians have established themselves as one of the WPL’s most consistent teams since the league began in 2023. They won the inaugural title after finishing second in the league stage and followed that campaign by reaching the playoffs in 2024. The franchise returned to the top in 2025, securing its second WPL championship.

However, Mumbai endured a more difficult campaign in 2026. They finished fourth in the league standings after recording three victories and five defeats. Despite that setback, their overall WPL record remains strong. Mumbai have played 37 matches in the competition, winning 23 and losing 14, giving them a success rate of 62.16 percent.
Their most dominant head-to-head record has come against Gujarat Giants, with Mumbai winning eight of their nine meetings. They have an even 5-5 record against Delhi Capitals, while their record against both RCB and UP Warriorz stands at five wins from nine matches.

Ambani also thanked Keightley for her contribution to Mumbai Indians and wished her success in the next chapter of her career.

Williams brings an impressive coaching résumé to the role, having been involved with title-winning teams in the Women’s Big Bash League, The Hundred and the WPL. Speaking after his appointment, Williams said he was excited about working with Mumbai’s players and support staff and building an entertaining and competitive team.
Mumbai’s squad already features a blend of experienced internationals and promising Indian talent. Harmanpreet remains at the helm, with overseas stars such as Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Shabnim Ismail and Nicola Carey. Indian players including Saika Ishaque, Sajeevan Sajana, G Kamalini and Vaishnavi Sharma add further depth to the squad.
