BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said the board has “sufficient time” to decide on the next chairman of the senior men’s selection committee, with Ajit Agarkar’s three-year tenure set to end on October 4. Agarkar has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he does not wish to seek an extension, bringing his stint as chairman of the senior selection committee to an end.
The former India all-rounder communicated his decision to the board on September 18. Following Agarkar’s decision, the BCCI authorised its office-bearers to take a call on the future of the selection committee. However, Saikia has made it clear that the board is not rushing the process and will decide on Agarkar’s replacement after his current contract expires.
“As far as Ajit Agarkar is concerned, his tenure is going to be over on 4th of October and we have sufficient time till 4th,” Devajit Saikia told PTI Videos. “We are going to take a decision regarding the vacant position which will be there after 4th of October. Once any decision is taken by BCCI, we will definitely announce it in public domain,” he added.

Agarkar became chairman of the senior men’s selection committee in July 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma. During his tenure, India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, adding two major ICC trophies to the team’s recent record.

The next chairman will inherit a team entering an important phase of its white-ball cycle, with preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup already underway. The selection committee will play a key role in shaping India’s squad and managing player combinations ahead of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia also spoke about India’s campaign at the Asian Games and praised the women’s team for winning the cricket gold medal in Japan. “We are very proud, the country is rejoicing their stupendous victory. The women’s team has really done well and they are continuing their winning streak for more than one year,” he said.

India’s men’s team will begin its Asian Games campaign on September 28, with the final scheduled for October 3. Saikia expressed hope that the men’s side can replicate the women’s team’s success. “We hope that the men will also follow the same pathway which the women’s team has laid in Japan. I hope the country will have another golden opportunity to rejoice on October 3,” he added.
