Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra believes the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction will not see any blockbuster bids or acquisitions because of a major lack of options in the player pool. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently confirmed that the event will take place in Goa in December.

“This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations – Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Abu Dhabi last year – we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December,” Saikia told ANI.

Aakash Chopra said that with teams likely to retain their core players for the last season of the three-year cycle, there will not be many big obvious names in the auction that will attract a massive bid.

“I am quite excited for this auction. Usually, in the mini auction, you can always make a small course correction. You can’t change the world because the teams are already built. Good players are not released back into the auction. The rare one or two good players that come are sold for extremely high amounts. Could there be someone like that this year? I don’t think anyone like that is there in the market this time. There is not a big name at this time, but things could change after players are released by franchises,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Aakash Chopra also questioned the governing body’s inability to strike a partnership with a particular hotel in India to conduct the IPL auctions since it always took place at the same phase of the year.

“This time, the auction will be held in India. December is generally the wedding season, so that has always been a problem for BCCI. They say that, ‘We can’t find a hotel where we can accommodate so many people at that time’. It is there, but why is it there? That is what I am trying to understand. Why does this happen? If they know that the auction is held in December, they can organise it, right? There are so many big cities and hotels in India, can there not be a tie-up? I think it can be organised,” Aakash Chopra concluded.
