Australia wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has suffered a major setback during the ongoing tour of South Africa after fracturing his right index finger in the first ODI in Durban. The injury has ruled Inglis out of the remaining two matches of the ODI series and has also raised questions over his availability for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa.

Inglis was hoping to build on his five Test appearances for Australia, but the finger fracture could now affect his chances of featuring in the Test squad. Cricket Australia confirmed that the 31-year-old will return to Perth for medical scans and further assessment.

The injury occurred while Inglis was keeping wickets during South Africa’s innings. Despite experiencing discomfort, the wicketkeeper continued behind the stumps until the end of the innings before walking out to bat at his usual No. 4 position.

However, Inglis could not make a significant contribution with the bat. He scored just three runs from eight deliveries before being dismissed while attempting a reverse sweep.

Following the match, Cricket Australia confirmed that Inglis would miss the final two ODIs against the Proteas. The governing body has yet to announce a replacement for the injured batter.

His Test availability will depend on the results of his medical assessment and recovery. Cricket Australia said Inglis would return home for scans, with his participation in the Test series “subject to further assessment and progress.”
