Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin commented on India captain Shubman Gill ahead of the second ODI against the West Indies. Team India won the first game by eight wickets. The second ODI will be played on Wednesday, September 30.
Ashwin also revealed that he was initially doubtful of Gill as captain but applauded him for the way he has led the Indian team and the Gujarat Titans (GT) as well in the IPL. He added that Gill has only been getting better in the role.
“His captaincy is also getting better day by day. There were some doubts in my head, but we have to compliment him. I am happily and pleasantly surprised by how his captaincy has gone up. He led GT well too this year, and he is showing it with India as well. It is a great quality to have,” he said on ‘Ash ki Baat’.

“Shubman Gill is a complete batter in the next generation of Indian batters. Between him and the rest, there is a bit of daylight. He is that good. I think going forward, he will come close to Virat if he gets that many games. Unfortunately for Gill, ODI cricket’s existence is in slight doubt. ODI cricket suits him a lot. But ODI cricket might not happen as much as it did when Virat was playing. It is unfortunate,” he further added.
Ravichandran Ashwin also commented on star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s injury concern. While Hardik was set to return to action for India A against Australia A, he unfortunately suffered a fresh injury while at the BCCI CoE, which ruled him out of the series as well.
“None of us know how hard he is working. I feel really sorry for Hardik. Sometimes, as a player, you do not know why it keeps happening again and again. It can be frustrating. You are ready and then get injured again. And this is not the first case. Maybe the players need to see how they are training, despite the physios being there. The CoE has to take more accountability. With only three-format players, this many injuries should not happen,” R Ashwin concluded.
