KL Rahul once again stepped up when India needed him most, producing a record-breaking unbeaten century in the third ODI against West Indies at the PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh on October 3. With the Caribbean bowlers putting pressure on the Indian batting lineup, Rahul walked in at No. 5 and took his time before launching a spectacular counterattack. KL Rahul completed his ninth ODI century in the 49th over, smashing a huge six off Jayden Seales. The landmark moment sparked a big celebration as Rahul removed his helmet and acknowledged the applause from the crowd.

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were also on their feet in the dressing room, applauding Rahul for his crucial contribution. The right-hander finished the innings unbeaten on 129 from just 87 deliveries. His aggressive knock included 10 fours and six sixes, giving him a remarkable strike rate of 148.28. His innings proved decisive in helping India set West Indies a challenging target.

According to Cricbuzz statistics, Rahul’s century was the eighth hundred scored during the bilateral series. It was the second-highest number of centuries recorded in a bilateral series of any length, with the nine hundreds in India’s 2013 home series against Australia still holding the record.

Rahul also moved into third place on the list of India’s highest individual ODI scores while batting at No. 5. His unbeaten 129 surpassed MS Dhoni’s previous score of 124 against Australia in Nagpur in 2009.

Yuvraj Singh continues to hold the record for India at No. 5, having scored 139 against Australia in Sydney in 2004. MS Dhoni’s 134 against England in Cuttack in 2017 sits second on the list.

India had already secured the three-match ODI series with victories in the opening two games, making the third match effectively a dead rubber for the hosts. For West Indies, however, the series finale offered an opportunity to avoid a clean sweep and finish the tour on a positive note.
