Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta urged captain Shubman Gill to achieve peak fitness to sustain his purple patch with the bat for an extended period. The youngster has been in great form in the ongoing home ODI series against the West Indies as well. Gill started the series with a stunning 110 in the first ODI, helping India chase 296 with eight wickets in hand. In the second ODI, he scored an incredible 223* off 133 balls to help India chase down the second-highest total ever of 406 as well.

Talking about Gill’s batting ahead of the third ODI, Dasgupta said on his YouTube channel, “In the last two years, he seems to have hit his peak across all formats and in the IPL. The late 20s are usually when a batter hits his peak. It’s also when a batter understands himself best. My only concern is that off-late, he has been playing with a few injuries. He couldn’t do much about a neck injury. But he suffered from cramps a couple of times when he crossed 70 or 80. Hopefully, he maintains his fitness levels.”

“Virat (Kohli) is a great example. He hit his peak, and he’s still going on, because he has maintained his fitness with determination and focus. Hopefully Shubman gets to learn that as he is spending time with Virat right now. It’ll help him sustain his peak for a long time,” he added.

Deep Dasgupta believes Shubman Gill has matured as a player and a person and is more confident over the past couple of years as well.

“You can see Gill has matured as a player and a person in the last one to two years. He is also growing into that captaincy role. If you see his press conferences from a year back to now, you can see that he’s a lot more confident. Even on the field, when he takes a DRS review, you can see the difference, and the body language is different. He has actually done better as a batter once he became captain in the IPL and for India. That tells me he’s enjoying the extra responsibility and is thriving,” he concluded.
