India ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill had a funny response when reporters began asking him about the team’s T20I plans, reminding them that he is no longer part of India’s shortest-format setup. A video of the exchange has gone viral on social media. Gill was asked about India’s gold-medal triumph at the 2026 Asian Games, where the Men in Blue defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the final.

The Indian captain congratulated his teammates, saying, “Congratulations to the Indian team and my teammates.” However, the questions soon shifted towards India’s upcoming T20I series against West Indies. When a reporter asked Gill about the planning for the five-match series, he quickly replied, “T20? Mai toh hu hi nahi,” reminding everyone that he is not part of the current T20I squad.

Gill had just returned from New Chandigarh, where India completed the three-match ODI series against West Indies. The ODI campaign was played alongside the men’s cricket competition at the Asian Games in Japan.

While Gill is now expected to take a break, India’s T20I squad will return from Japan for the five-match series against West Indies, beginning on October 6.

The 26-year-old has been outside India’s T20I plans since late 2025. Although he was briefly named vice-captain, Gill struggled to make a significant impact and was subsequently left out of the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

There have also been reports of Gill being considered for a T20I return, but the BCCI has reportedly preferred not to add the workload of a third format while he leads India in Tests and ODIs.

For now, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remain among India’s opening options in T20Is. Gill is likely to turn his attention to domestic cricket, including the Ranji Trophy for Punjab, while continuing preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
