Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed the new head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027. He replaced Hemang Badani, who was the coach for the last two seasons as well. However, Ganguly has been associated with the Delhi Capitals franchise since 2019, when he joined as an advisor. After his tenure as BCCI president, he was appointed Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams as well. Moreover, he recently served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, leading them to the SA20 final earlier this year as well.

“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years,” Ganguly said. “I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team.”

Sourav Ganguly will guide Delhi Capitals to their first IPL title. One of only two original franchises, alongside Punjab Kings, that are yet to win the competition. However, Delhi came closest in 2020 when they reached the final. They also topped the table the following year but failed to reach the final. Notably, they have not made the playoffs since that 2021 season and also finished sixth last year under the Axar Patel-Hemang Badani combination as well.

“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest,” said JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal.
Sourav Ganguly will now have to finalise his support staff and plan the squad retentions before the November 15 deadline. The mini auction will be held in mid-December in Goa as well.
