India’s batting fireworks were followed by a devastating pace display from Mayank Yadav, who claimed three wickets inside the powerplay to put the West Indies under immense pressure in their chase of 250 in the second T20I in Ranchi on Friday. After being asked to bat first by West Indies captain Shai Hope, India posted a record 249/5 in 20 overs, their highest-ever T20I total against the Caribbean side. Sanju Samson top-scored with a blistering 82 off 41 balls, while Ishan Kishan contributed 43 off 22 deliveries.

Shreyas Iyer added a quickfire 40 off 18 balls, and Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 44 off just 18 deliveries. The West Indies needed an aggressive start to stay in contention, but Mayank had other plans. The young Indian fast bowler struck twice in the opening over, delivering a stunning double blow that left the visitors reeling.
Mayank first dismissed Kamil Pooran with a 143 kmph short delivery in the third ball of the over. Pooran top-edged the ball, and substitute fielder Ravi Bishnoi sprinted in from square leg to complete an excellent catch near midwicket.

The next delivery proved even more damaging. Mayank bowled a 144 kmph short-of-a-length ball that jagged back sharply, beating Shimron Hetmyer’s attempted defence before crashing into the stumps. Hetmyer departed for a golden duck, leaving West Indies struggling at 5/2 after just four deliveries.

Mayank returned in the final over of the powerplay to claim his third wicket with a delivery clocked at a remarkable 149.5 kmph. Rovman Powell attempted to heave the ball across the line, but the express delivery struck his back pad before hitting the off stump. Powell departed for 24 off 13 balls.
The dismissal completed Mayank’s three-wicket burst, leaving West Indies at 72/3 after six overs. The pacer finished the powerplay with figures of 3/36 from three overs.

India’s total surpassed their previous highest T20I score against the West Indies, the 244/4 they recorded at Lauderhill in 2016, when they lost a last-ball thriller by one run. Their other notable totals against the Caribbean side included 240/3 at Wankhede and 209/4 in Hyderabad in 2019.ย Samson and the middle order gave India a formidable platform, while Mayank’s express pace made the visitors’ record chase even more challenging from the outset.
