England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler is expected to miss the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia after undergoing surgery for a left hamstring injury. England are scheduled to play three ODIs and five T20Is against Australia from November 13 to December 2, with the selectors set to announce the squads on Tuesday. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Buttler will not be available for selection after sustaining the injury while batting in the second ODI against Sri Lanka in September.

The setback comes at a crucial stage as England prepare for a demanding international schedule. Jos Buttler, who captained England to the T20 World Cup title in 2022, is also facing uncertainty over his participation in the 2027 SA20 season because of the expected recovery period. He represents Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Manchester Super Giants in The Men’s Hundred. He was retained by Durban’s Super Giants ahead of the SA20 2027 auction.

The 35-year-old recently became the first player to score 15,000 runs in T20 cricket. On Monday, he shared an update on Instagram Stories after his surgery, posting a picture from his hospital bed. “Successful surgery and on the road to recovery. Feeling more motivated than ever!” Jos Buttler wrote, expressing optimism about his rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced its latest list of central contracts on Monday, awarding Buttler a one-year deal that expires before the 2027 ODI World Cup. The length of the contract has raised questions about his long-term role, but ECB chief executive Rob Key has insisted that Buttler remains part of England’s plans.

Key clarified that the one-year contract should not be interpreted as a sign that Buttler or leg-spinner Adil Rashid will miss the upcoming World Cup.

“We don’t see it that Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid aren’t going to be a part of that World Cup,” Key said. Rob “We have them very much factored in. If they weren’t a part of it, we wouldn’t have been playing them since then. They’re both desperate to play for England.”

Key added that further decisions would be made next year, explaining that the contract structure was part of the existing system. Buttler’s immediate priority will be recovering fully from surgery and returning to competitive cricket. His rehabilitation progress will be important in determining his availability for England’s future assignments and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
