India’s men’s cricket team is set to tour New Zealand later this month for a multi-format series featuring five T20Is, five ODIs and two Test matches. According to a report published by The Times of India on Wednesday, the Indian Test team is expected to play a warm-up match before the crucial red-ball series to prepare for New Zealand’s challenging conditions.

As per the report, the warm-up fixture could take place after the third unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A concludes on November 10 and before the first Test begins in Wellington on November 19.

India have not played a Test match in New Zealand since February 2020, when they suffered defeats in both matches. With several members of the current Indian Test squad having limited experience playing in New Zealand, the proposed warm-up game could help them adapt to the conditions and prepare for the upcoming challenge.

The potential fixture also raises questions about the availability of key players, including Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, Test vice-captain KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. These players are also expected to feature in India’s ODI squad, with the five-match series scheduled to conclude on November 15. The final three ODIs will take place on November 10, 13 and 15.

New Zealand have already rested some of their first-choice Test players for the final two ODIs against India. The Indian team management and selectors could consider a similar approach to ensure their key players are adequately prepared for the Test series.

The upcoming Test series carries significant importance for both teams in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Although New Zealand currently occupy second place in the standings, they are not guaranteed a place in the 2027 WTC final.

The Black Caps need to win at least six of their remaining matches to strengthen their qualification prospects. With a challenging tour of Australia scheduled for December, securing consecutive Test victories against India would provide a major boost to their campaign.

India, meanwhile, will be eager to overcome their previous struggles in New Zealand and collect crucial WTC points. A preparatory match could prove valuable as both sides look to strengthen their positions in the race for the final.
