Former Indian player Sadagoppan Ramesh questioned the possibility of Rohit Sharma taking over as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain again, keeping in mind how the last stint ended. Despite leading MI to all five IPL titles, Rohit was stripped of the leadership ahead of the 2024 season, with Hardik Pandya replacing him. However, MI have struggled under Hardik in the last three seasons as well.

Talking about this, Ramesh said on his Instagram handle: “It’s a no-brainer that MI want to move on from Hardik Pandya as captain. But it’s doubtful whether MI will offer Rohit captaincy and, even if they do, whether Rohit will have the right mindset to take over as captain. Because we remember the bitter experience when he was removed as captain. So it remains to be seen if Rohit accepts captaincy again or whether he may also prefer taking over a fresh team after the mega auction.”

“MI may also think twice about going back to a Rohit that they only removed from captaincy. However, if Rohit does become MI captain again, life will come full circle. After all, he was removed to make Hardik the captain, and now he’ll replace the same Hardik as captain,” he again shared.

Sadagoppan Ramesh also mentioned Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma as other captaincy options for MI besides Rohit Sharma as well.
“There is a strong possibility of MI appointing Suryakumar Yadav based on his recent success at the T20 World Cup. Otherwise, they could think of making Bumrah the captain for next season, considering his leadership of India in the famous Perth Test win and his innumerable contributions in helping them win titles, especially with his captaincy aspirations,” said Ramesh. “Lastly, they could go the youngster route and think of trying out Tilak Varma for one year. He has started being India’s vice-captain.”
