Tilak Varma delivered a match-winning performance as India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in the second T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24. The left-handed batter scored an unbeaten half-century under pressure and produced an outstanding effort in the field to help India take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Tilak smashed an unbeaten 51 off just 26 deliveries to guide India home while also taking two important catches during New Zealand’s innings. His all-round contribution earned him the Player of the Match award and helped the visitors maintain their winning momentum.

Apart from his match-winning knock, Tilak created a world record for the most catches by a fielder in men’s T20Is in a single calendar year. After taking two catches during the first three overs of New Zealand’s innings, the Indian batter reached 26 catches in T20Is in 2026. He surpassed Indonesia’s Danilson Hawoe, who previously held the record with 25 catches in 2025.
Tilak’s achievement added another milestone to an impressive performance in Christchurch, where his contribution with both bat and ball proved decisive. India’s chase of 181 runs looked in danger after the visitors slumped to 70/5 in the 11th over. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner caused significant damage with his spin bowling, finishing with impressive figures of 4/21.

Naman Dhir attempted to revive the chase with an aggressive 31, sharing a valuable partnership with Tilak. However, his dismissal left India struggling at 112/6 in the 15th over. With the required run rate climbing, Tilak Varma found an ideal partner in Nitish Kumar Reddy. The pair showed excellent composure and attacked at the right moments, adding an unbeaten 69 runs off just 30 balls for the seventh wicket.
Nitish contributed an unbeaten 26 off 13 deliveries, while Tilak controlled the chase with timely boundaries and quick running between the wickets. Their partnership helped India reach 181/6 in 19.5 overs, completing a remarkable four-wicket victory with one ball remaining.
Speaking after receiving the Player of the Match award, Tilak Varma explained that his primary objective was to remain at the crease until the end and take the game deep into the final overs. He credited head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak for encouraging him before the match. “Just before today’s game, I was talking with coach Gautam sir and Sitanshu Kotak Sir. I was talking with both of them, and they said one thing that we all believe, and the whole India believes in you,” Tilak said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

He added that he trusted his ability to finish the chase if he stayed at the crease. “If you stay till the end, then you will win the game for us. So that’s what was going through my mind. I wanted to take the game as deep as possible,” he explained.
Tilak Varma also revealed that the slower pitch made it difficult to play aggressive shots against New Zealand’s spinners.

“The pitch was on the slower side; unfortunately, Naman got out, or else we would have finished the game in the 19th over,” he said. Reflecting on his partnership with Nitish, Tilak highlighted their plan to find gaps and run hard rather than rely entirely on boundaries. “Then we had the Hyderabadi boys together—the plan was that we wanted to show intent, push into gaps, and run hard. I think we did that; we got some crucial 8-10 runs,” he added.
Tilak’s record-breaking fielding effort and unbeaten half-century proved decisive as India strengthened their position in the T20I series against New Zealand.
