Mumbai Indians have announced a major change to their coaching setup, confirming that Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson will leave their respective roles with the men’s team. Malinga has enjoyed a long association with Mumbai Indians, first establishing himself as one of the franchise’s most successful players. The Sri Lankan pace legend spent 11 years representing MI before transitioning into a coaching role as Bowling Mentor during the IPL 2018 season. Ahead of IPL 2024, he became the team’s fast-bowling coach, replacing Shane Bond.

Mhambrey joined Mumbai Indians as an additional bowling coach before the IPL 2025 season. Meanwhile, Hopkinson was appointed fielding coach in 2024 and is now moving on from his responsibilities with the franchise.

Announcing the departures, Mumbai Indians thanked all three coaches for their dedication and contributions to the team over the years.

“Mumbai Indians today announced that Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey and Carl Hopkinson will be moving on from their respective roles in the men’s team coaching setup, thanking each of them for their commitment, contribution and service to the franchise,” the statement read.

The franchise also expressed gratitude for the relationships they had built and the memories they helped create during their time with the MI family, wishing them success in their future endeavours.

The latest changes follow another major development in Mumbai Indians’ coaching structure. Former batting coach Kieron Pollard has been promoted to head coach, replacing Mahela Jayawardene. The franchise could now look to recruit fresh faces for its batting, bowling and fielding departments ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
