Marnus Labuschagne’s struggles in Test cricket continued during the third and final Test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town. With the series level at 1-1, the decider has turned into a crucial contest for both sides. However, Labuschagne’s latest failure has raised further questions about his place in Australia’s Test XI, with the experienced batter facing increasing pressure ahead of the next series. Australia dominated the opening Test, securing a comprehensive 214-run victory. However, South Africa bounced back strongly in the second match, thanks to a brilliant performance from captain Temba Bavuma and a fighting contribution from Marco Jansen.

After building a substantial first-innings lead, the Proteas carried their momentum forward and eventually secured an innings victory to level the series. Marnus Labuschagne endured another disappointing outing in the second innings of the Cape Town Test. Chasing a target of 290 runs, Australia needed a solid start, but the right-handed batter departed for just four runs. He faced only three deliveries and struck one boundary before Kagiso Rabada dismissed him in the opening over.
The dismissal came from a sharp delivery that nipped back from around the fifth-stump line. Having already decided to leave the ball, Labuschagne failed to get his bat behind it. The delivery struck the flap of his back pad, prompting the umpire to raise his finger for LBW. Australia’s review confirmed the on-field decision as umpire’s call.

The 32-year-old has struggled throughout the series against South Africa. Despite scoring a century in the warm-up match, he has been unable to translate that form into meaningful performances in the Tests. His highest score in the series remains 39, while he finished with just 131 runs across the three matches.
Labuschagne’s prolonged century drought has become another major concern. He has now gone 49 consecutive Test innings without reaching three figures, surpassing Alick Bannerman’s previous Australian top-four record of 47 innings, set between 1879 and 1893.

His last Test century came against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, in July 2023. He also registered a five-ball duck in Australia’s first innings in Cape Town, further highlighting his difficulties. Although captain Pat Cummins and the selectors have continued backing him, Labuschagne’s place is now under serious scrutiny. Another unsuccessful series could force Australia to reconsider their options ahead of the next Test assignment.

Both fitting and unfortunate that Marnus’ last Australia innings will be over with an umpires review call. He had the luck early in his career, but Labuschagne hasn’t had it these days
Sad to see – he’s better then this and we all know it

It’s kinda funny that the term ‘being a Marnus’ already had the exact same meaning before Labuschagne showed it again this year @CricketAus

Best halloween costume I’ve seen so far has been Marnus Labuschagne dressed as an Australian cricketer batting at no 3 tonight. #SAvAUS
