India wrapped up the first three matches of their five-match T20I series against New Zealand with victories, giving the team management an opportunity to experiment with its squad in the remaining encounters. However, several players, including Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Auqib Nabi and Kumar Kushagra, did not get a single opportunity throughout the series. Dube’s continued exclusion particularly surprised former cricketers and analysts, with questions being raised about India’s squad rotation policy and the all-rounder’s role in the team’s future plans.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed his disappointment over Dube not featuring in the playing XI. He highlighted the all-rounder’s experience in important international matches and argued that his recent performances made him deserving of an opportunity.
Speaking on Cricinfo, Chopra pointed out that Dube had delivered in high-pressure situations, including the Asian Games final, and had also represented India in ODI cricket against England. “Dube played the Asian Games final and scored runs, and he has also played ODI cricket against England. You cannot just say that he is no longer needed. I will be surprised if he is absolutely dislodged. Yes, Nitish Kumar Reddy has done a job. He is a better bowler, but Shivam Dube is a better finisher,” Aakash Chopra said.

The selection debate largely revolves around the contrasting strengths of Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy. While both provide seam-bowling options, Reddy offers greater consistency with the ball, whereas Dube is particularly valuable as a power-hitter and finisher in the middle order.

India preferred Reddy for the opening T20I on October 22, 2026, and continued backing him during the series. Aakash Chopra acknowledged the youngster’s contribution but insisted that Dube brings a different quality to the team, especially in high-pressure tournaments. He also stressed that understanding the team’s selection strategy was important before judging the decision.
“What you want from a player is something that might eventually decide your selection. But for that, we must also understand the thought process. Nitish will give you the overs, but Dube will finish games. World Cup finals, Asian Games, Asia Cup-those are the places where Shivam Dube has come into his own. I am in no hurry to write him off,” Aakash Chopra added.

Dube’s tournament record further strengthens his case. He was part of India’s title-winning campaigns at the 2024 and 2026 Men’s T20 World Cups, showcasing his ability to contribute on the biggest stage. His performances in the Asian Games and Asia Cup have also highlighted his value in pressure situations.
With the next major T20 assignments approaching, India’s handling of Dube’s role could become an important selection discussion.
