Yashasvi Jaiswal Reveals How Discipline and Technical Adjustments Helped Him Score Unbeaten 155 Against New Zealand A
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal bounced back from a difficult run of scores to produce an impressive unbeaten 155 for India A in the drawn second unofficial Test against New Zealand A at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Tuesday. The left-handed batter played a crucial role in India’s second-innings recovery after the visitors conceded a 78-run first-innings lead.

Jaiswal’s magnificent knock came at an important time, having struggled in the opening matches of the series. He scored 17 and 5 in the first unofficial Test before registering a duck in India’s first innings in Christchurch. However, the youngster showed tremendous patience and determination in the second innings, reaching his century in 119 balls before accelerating towards a 155-run finish off 162 deliveries.

Speaking after his impressive performance, Yashasvi Jaiswal explained that discipline, maintaining a routine and trusting the process were crucial to succeeding in challenging overseas conditions. “It’s not that easy… Just focus on process, routine, discipline. I think you have to be very disciplined here,” he said.

The Indian opener also discussed the difficulties of batting in New Zealand, highlighting the cold weather, persistent cloud cover and changing sunlight conditions. According to Jaiswal, these factors made the challenge considerably different from playing in countries such as India, Australia and England.

“New Zealand is a very different place compared to India, Australia, even England. Because it’s very cold here. If you look at the air, the whole day it was cloudy. Then for some time, the sun came and left. It’s been like this for the last four days,” he explained.

Yashasvi Jaiswal further pointed out that the new ball and considerable seam movement made it difficult for batters to score freely during the initial stages of their innings. He credited the New Zealand A bowlers for consistently hitting the right areas and forcing the Indian batters to remain patient. “It’s very cold here. The ball moves a lot initially and there is a lot of seam movement. And there are good bowlers hitting good areas consistently. So we have to wait a lot to make runs initially,” he added.

The 24-year-old also revealed the technical adjustments he made to counter the movement. He preferred playing close to his body and moving towards the ball rather than allowing deliveries to get too close to him. Jaiswal also changed his initial batting stance during the match to adapt to the conditions.

“Mainly, in my mind, the closer I play to the body, the better it is. Go to the ball and play. If you look at the first innings, my initial stance was behind. Then I changed again. If the bowler is not bowling fast, then you can manage the seam movement. If I get a loose ball, I will try to score runs. Rest is just an effort,” he said.

Yashasvi Jaiswal added that batting becomes relatively more comfortable once the ball gets older and the pitch settles, although he acknowledged that scoring runs still requires concentration.

Meanwhile, he shared an unbeaten 247-run partnership for the third wicket with Yash Rathod, who contributed 100 off 122 deliveries. After India A lost Sai Sudharsan (11) and Devdutt Padikkal (0) early on the fourth day, the duo guided the team to 282/2 in 52.4 overs before the match ended in a draw. Earlier, India A had posted 346 in their first innings after New Zealand A elected to field. Dhruv Jurel led the scoring with 105 off 171 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal contributed 80, Akash Deep scored 68 and Sai Sudharsan added 41.
