India pacer Gurnoor Brar produced one of the spectacular one-handed caught-and-bowled dismissals of Tom Latham in the first ODI. The young fast bowler displayed outstanding reflexes and athleticism to remove the experienced New Zealand batter, further strengthening India’s position in Auckland.

With several senior Indian fast bowlers unavailable, Brar has an opportunity to establish himself at the international level. The tall pacer made the most of his chance by delivering a memorable fielding effort during his bowling spell.
The incident occurred on the final delivery of the 16th over. Brar bowled a fuller delivery outside the off stump, moving away from Latham. The New Zealand batter attempted a tentative drive but could only manage a leading edge that sent the ball into the air.

Brar reacted quickly, stretched out his left hand and completed a stunning catch in his follow-through. Latham departed after scoring just three runs off 11 deliveries, handing India another crucial breakthrough.
The dismissal reduced New Zealand to 84/4 after 17 overs. Removing Latham was particularly important for India, given the batter’s ability to build an innings once settled at the crease.

Earlier, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first. Light rain and a wet outfield delayed the toss by 20 minutes, while the start of the match was pushed back by another 10 minutes. However, the game continued without any reduction in overs.
India fielded Gurnoor Brar, Anshul Kamboj, Aaqib Nabi and Arshdeep Singh as their specialist fast-bowling options. The combined international experience of the four pacers was limited, making their performance particularly important.

Mohammed Siraj’s omission raised questions, especially with Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna unavailable due to injuries. Siraj had recently taken four wickets in the second unofficial Test. India entered the ODI series after winning the five-match T20I contest 3-2. The two teams will also meet in a two-Test series following the ODIs.
