During the 34th match of the 11th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Indore, Mumbai Indians beat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets to prevent themselves from being all but out in the tournament.
After Rohit Sharma won the toss and put Kings XI Punjab in to bat, the home team started in the affirmative as Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle stitched a 54-run stand for the first wicket. Gayle per se was looking set to play a notable knock. In the middle overs, wickets fell and so did the run rate to the extent that Punjab’s innings looked in shambles at one point in time. They eventually scored 176-6 in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
In reply, Mumbai Indians got off to a slow start. Opener Evin Lewis (10) getting out in the last over of the powerplay didn’t help their case either. However, it was a 21-ball 56-run partnership which saw the fortune of the match being changed.
Despite Rohit Sharma and Krunal Pandya on strike, it seemed difficult for Mumbai Indians to score 36 runs in the last three overs to win the match. It was at this point in time that Marcus Stoinis conceded 20 runs in an over to change the course of the match. On the second ball of the over, Rohit Sharma drove a slower ball from Stoinis for a cover drive which earned him four runs.
On the fourth ball of the over, Krunal Pandya repeated the same shot on a similar kind of delivery for the same result. On the penultimate delivery of the over, Krunal Pandya hit a full-toss down the leg side for a boundary through the square leg region. The last ball saw Krunal Pandya hitting a nothing ball over long on for a six.
