A new selection panel has been formed for the Sri Lanka national cricket team after the gambling allegations break out against the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Thilanga Sumathipala.
Former Sri Lankan medium-pacer and present match referee Graeme Labrooy has re-appointed as the selection committee chairman while Gamini Wickremasinghe, Eric Upashantha and Jeryl Woutersz are the other members in this panel. Present Sri Lankan cricket team head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe will play the Selector-on-Tour role.
As a major change, the national cricket team manager Asanka Gurusinha has been omitted from the selection panel members.
After the court suspended the recent election in Sri Lanka cricket for two weeks, the sports ministry stepped in to manage the SLC.
The election has been suspended after the 1996 World winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga’s brother Nishantha Ranatunga filed a petition by mentioning Sumathipala is unsuitable for the presidential election.
Sumathipala has been accused of violating the ICC code of conduct by involving in gambling. However, the 54-year-old has denied those accusations by claiming he didn’t involve in any wrong business.
While the Sri Lankan cricket team is going to start the Test series on their Caribbean tour, the selection committee’s next assignment will be to select the squad for the home Test series against South Africa that will begin on July 12.
On the other hand, SLC also reappointed the women selection committee for one year. Rasanjali de Alwis has been retained the as chief selector while Jayamini Indika and Thalika Gunaratne and Mr. Waruna Waragoda are the other members.
Both the selection committees will be effective for one year, starting from May 16, 2018.
