England wicket-keeper Jos Buttler is said that he is completely confident about leading the English squad again after they registered a series-clinching win over Australia at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. He found himself unexpectedly thrust into the role when regular ODI captain Eoin Morgan pulled out shortly before the start of Saturday’s second ODI in Cardiff.

The extra responsibility came naturally for Buttler to inhibit, who played a blistering knock of 91* in a total of 342 for eight that also featured a century from Jason Roy. Jos led the team from behind the stumps as well as the hosts defeated the Australians 38 runs to go 2-0 up in a five-match series.

Buttler, reflecting on captaining England at Sophia Gardens, said: “I enjoyed it. It’s a bit more stressful going through lots of decisions, (and) the buck stops with you. As vice-captain, you can suggest a few (ideas), and hide behind that.”

In 2016, Buttler led the England squad in the series win in Bangladesh when Morgan refused to tour because of security concerns. Talking about the same, he said, “The guys know what they’re doing. It’s a very good side to captain. At times it captains itself, with defined roles for the players and a lot of experience in the group.”

The job of wicket-keeping is a tiring one in itself as it demands an immense amount of concentration and because of that, it gives a very little time for leadership as well. But both England and Australia were led by keepers on Saturday, with Tim Paine now the tourists’ full-time Test and ODI skipper after Steve Smith has been banned for a year in March’s ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Talking about the mixture of doing wicketkeeping and captaincy together, Buttler said, “I don’t think it’s impossible to do so. Lots of captains have been wicket-keepers as well. You’ve got a pretty good position to see what’s happening and what’s going on, so I don’t think it’s a problem.”

The update on Morgan’s fitness yet to come from the English team along with the sidelined all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, but it has been expected that some updates regarding the same will come on Monday.
