After biopics on some male Indian cricketers, it is time for the biopic of India’s most successful women’s captain Mithali Raj and the recent reports have suggested that the Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu wants to don her role in the movie the rights for which were acquired in September last year by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures.

The ‘Pink’ star, who will turn 31 on August 1, has expressed her desire to play the role of the ODI and Test captain who is the highest scorer in the ODIs in women’s cricket. The makers of the biopic are reportedly interested to rope in Taapsee, who has made a name of herself in a short career so far, as well.

As quoted in PTI, when asked about the biopic, Taapsee replied,  “The script is not in place so it’s too early to talk about it. Right now, they are collecting material and the script has not been written yet. If they offer me, I will be very happy. I really want to do a sports biopic.”

Tapsee’s latest movie has also been a biographical sports drama titled ‘Soorma’ based on the life of former Indian hockey skipper Sandeep Singh. In terms of women biopic, Priyanka Chopra played the title role in the 2014 film ‘Mary Kom’ based on the Olympic medal winner boxer and World Champion from Northeast India.

Mithali is the only woman cricketer to surpass the tally of 6,000 ODI runs and also the first player to hit seven consecutive 50+ scores in this format. She is also the first and the only Indian cricketer to have led the country to the final of the ICC World Cup twice – 2005 and 2017 – something that male World Cup-winning captains Kapil Dev and Mahendra Singh Dhoni could not do but for one game.

Expressing her pleasure over the development, Raj, who represented India in 10 Tests and 194 ODIs besides 77 T20Is, said in a statement: “I am extremely happy on this association with Viacom18 Motion Pictures. Hoping that this movie inspires more people especially young girls to take up sports as a career.”
