Indian Test opening batsman Murali Vijay is confident to return in the Test squad soon but at first, he wants India to win the ongoing five-match Test series against the hosts England.
While the fourth Test of the series is running, India is trailing the Test series by 2-1. Indian opening batsman Vijay disappointed in this Test tour as he played only the first two games where he scored a total of 26 runs with the average of 6.50. In the second Test at Lord’s, Vijay faced a pair as Anderson dismissed him both times without opening his account.
Vijay was dropped from the playing XI for the third Test at Trent Bridge and then he was dropped from the last two Test squads.
However, Vijay is very positive to make a return in the national squad soon after sorting out few things.
He told The Hindu, “I will be back playing for India. I am positive, will sort a few things out, make runs – (but) firstly, I want India to win the series in England.”
The 34-year-old has reminded that it is not the first time he has been dropped out from the squad. He also added that the age does not matter as long as he feels fit himself.
Vijay said, “It is not the first time this has happened to me. I believe age is only a number. As long as my feet move and my head is still, I will continue to play.”
Since making debut in international cricket in 2008, Vijay has played 59 Tests, 17 ODIs and two T20Is. The Test specialist opener is very close to reaching his 4,000 Test runs as he has scored already 3,933 runs in Test cricket with the average of 39.33. The right-handed batsman has scored 12 centuries and 15 half-centuries in his Test career, including his highest international career score 167.
Last time when India had a tour in England in 2014, Vijay was very successful as he had scored 402 runs in that series in 10 innings (5 matches) with the average of 40.20, including one century and two half-centuries. He was the most runs scorer for India in that five-match Test series.
Talking about decreasing his performances on this tour, Vijay credited the English pacers to execute their game plans well against him.
Vijay said on it, “The English pacemen had their game plan worked out this time, bowling closer to my body and making me play a lot more deliveries.”
