Former English Test opener Nick Compton has announced his retirement from the professional cricket on Thursday (October 4).
The 35-year-old cricketer claims that his best moment in the career was playing for England and winning Test series for England. The right-handed opening batsman played 16 Tests for England between 2012 and 2016.
Compton told the Middlesex’s website, “The pinnacle of my career was following in my grandfather Denis Compton’s footsteps, having achieved my dream of playing and winning Test series for England.”
Compton was the opening partner of Alastair Cook when England won the 2012/13 Test series in India. Since 1984/85, it was England’s first ever Test series victory on the Indian soil.
Compton said, “I am particularly proud of my successful opening partnership with Alastair Cook and our series victory in India. There have been some challenges that I have had to confront, but in spite of these I feel incredibly fortunate to have had this career.”
Nick played 194 first-class games, 121 List A matches and 87 T20s where he scored 12,168 runs (average 40.42), 3,174 runs (average 35.26) and 1,318 runs (average 19.67) respectively.
Nick followed his grandfather Denis Compton’s path, who was the English cricket legend and began his professional career for Middlesex in 2004. Apart from playing five seasons for Somerset (2010-2014), Nick always played for Middlesex but didn’t feature in the 2018 summer.
The grandson said, “It seems fitting that I have decided to retire now – 2018 is the year Middlesex awarded me a Testimonial Year. It is also my grandfather’s centenary and it gives me huge pride in being able to pay tribute to someone that has left such a positive legacy in my life and in British sport. I hope I did all I could to keep the Compton Family flag flying.”
Middlesex Cricket CEO Richard Goatley feels sad on Nick’s retirement as he remarked Nick as a very special servant to the club.
Goatley said, “It is a sad day for us that Nick Compton has retired from professional cricket. Nick has been a very special servant to the club, culminating in his key role in the Championship winning success of 2016. We are delighted that he will remain with the club in an ambassadorial role.”
