The Windies all-rounder Roston Chase has become a knight in the shining armor for his team on day one of the second Test against India in Hyderabad. However, he credited a bit of patience as the key to being unbeaten on 98 at stumps on the first day.
Chase’s batting form was criticized the past few Test series, with only three fifties in his previous 17 innings, but now that he is two runs short of a fourth Test century he reckons that the good vibes are beginning to flow again. West Indies were 295/7 at the end of play in Hyderabad, with Chase’s unbeaten 98 the difference after a crushing loss at Rajkot.
Talking about his game after the stumps, Chase said, “I just took my time, more than what I did in the first game where I thought I just went away from my strengths and tried to over-hit the ball which is not necessary on outfields like the ones you get here. I was working hard with my coaches and as I said in the press conference, it is about believing in the processes and in your game and the results would come. I didn’t worry about what was happening at the other end and was only looking to focus on my game.”

Chase was aggressive against spin from the time he arrived at the crease after the fall of the fourth wicket, showing a particular liking for Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling he smashed two early fours followed by an indifferent six when the pace was slowed. His half-century was completed in 80 balls. Overall, he played India’s trio of spinners well and was two short of a fourth Test century.
The all-arounder concluded by describing his comfort against spinners, he said, “The spinners dominate the bowling in first-class cricket in the Caribbean so I am accustomed to playing spin bowling. I thought the wickets here would spin a lot more but they are really good.”
Chase will walk out to bat on 98 on Saturday morning and he won’t be losing sleep overnight. He said that his process is simple as he doesn’t play the ball before it leaves the bowler’s hand.
