Former World Cup-winning Australian captain Steve Waugh believes the Australian cricket team might surprise in the four-match home Test series against the better Indian cricket team as India’s recent away records are not so impressing.

Many experts believe that it is the best ever Indian side to travel on the Australian tour while Australia is facing decline performances in international cricket. Accepting India’s present better condition, the former Australian skipper Steve Waugh has pointed out India’s recent away Test performances and claimed that Australia might surprise in this assignment.

Early in this year, India lost the three-match Test series (by 2-1) in South Africa and recently in August-September, India lost the five-match Test series (by 4-1) in England. Last time, India had won a Test series in the SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) was in 2009 during New Zealand tour and since 2011, India has lost all the Test series in the SENA countries.

According to Fox Sports, Waugh said, “India, they’re talking up a good game but they’ve come off a pretty disappointing series in England … their away form is pretty ordinary over the past five or 10 years. I think Australia might surprise actually.”

While Waugh believes that the Australian bowlers have enough ability to take 20 wickets on the home soil and if the batting side manages to put at least 350 runs on the board in the first innings of the Test match, it will be easy for the side to beat this Indian side.

Waugh added, “I think if Australia can score 350 runs in our first innings we’ll win the Test match. Our bowlers are world class and particularly in our conditions we’ll take 20 wickets. As long as we can score runs, if we get 350 in the first innings, we’ll win the series.”

However, Waugh also believes that it will be the best opportunity for India to get success in Australia after a long time. Praising Indian skipper Virat Kohli’s captaincy and batting qualities, Waugh claims that few more batsmen need to follow Kohli to achieve the success in this tour.

Waugh said, “They (India) have got a very good side. They will see this as their best opportunity to win in Australia for a long time. (Virat) Kohli is a great leader and a great batsman. If a couple of others follow him in and start scoring runs they are a chance.”
