Innovation is a primary requirement of any sport. Cricket is no different. In terms of batting, ‘switch hit’ has emerged as the biggest invention of the past decade. As far as one can recall, Kevin Pietersen was the first batsman to play the switch hit.
Over the years, this shot has been practiced and now mastered by many other batsmen as well. The Australian duo of David Warner and Glenn Maxwell, particularly Maxwell, have used this ploy on a consistent basis to disturb the opposition bowler’s lines and lengths.
However, it is not as easy as it sounds. Playing a switch hit requires a substantial amount of concentration, balance and the hand-eye coordination for it is a mean task to play a left-hander’s shot while batting right-handed or the vice-versa.
