Former South African captain, Graeme Smith, will be remembered as one of the most transforming leaders in cricket. He was not only a champion batsman or a visionary leader, but, a stout individual as well.
During the third Test of South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2008-09 at Sydney, Smith came out to bat with a broken hand in a bid to save the match. Having won the first two Test matches at Perth and Melbourne by 6 and 9 wickets respectively, South Africa had gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
The fact that he risked his hand with the series already in the bag speaks volume about Smith. Despite winning the series, not losing that particular match remained his priority. Smith came in to bat when Andrew McDonald found Dale Steyn (28) wanting in front of the stumps. Smith had to hang on for close to 10 overs to ensure a draw.
As unfortunate as it may sound, Smith (3) was bowled by Mitchell Johnson when only 10 balls were left in the innings. However, his efforts were praised by one and all. Watch the full video:
