After India suffered a demoralizing loss against Bangladesh in the 1st T20I of the three-match series on Sunday in Delhi, there has been a plethora of questions that have been raised about the team’s approach in the shortest format of the game. Earlier, India brushed aside the West Indies 3-0 in a T20I series earlier this year before leveling the series with South Africa at home.

Legendary Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, in an interview with Sports Tak, conceded that unless India starts winning more and bigger matches, it ‘won’t be easy’ for them to win the 2020 T20 World Cup.

Gavaskar said, “In ICC rankings India is at 5. If they are to go to 2/3, they will have to win some big matches. And if they can’t do this, it will not be easy for them to win the (T20) World Cup. We need to learn from the Delhi loss. You can’t just forget this. We have seen that whenever the team bats first they play a lot more dot balls as compared to when they’re chasing. In Delhi, I think there were 55 dot balls in the 1st innings, which in my opinion is too much.”

The veteran cricketer also reckons that questions will also be raised in the form of the veteran opener, Shikhar Dhawan.

Talking about Dhawan, Gavaskar further explained, “Questions will be raised on Shikhar Dhawan if he doesn’t bat well in the next 2 matches. The team is not going to benefit if you’re scoring 40-45 runs from the same number of balls. He will have to think about this. When players come back after the gap, it does take a lot of time to get back the rhythm.”

Earlier on Sunday chasing 149 to win the match, Bangladesh got some apt support from Mushfiqur Rahim’s 60* off 43 balls and Soumya Sarkar’s 39 off 35 balls to reach take the team over the line with 3 balls to spare. Mushfiqur and Sarkar were part of a partnership of 44 runs for the third wicket while Sarkar also added 46 with debutant Mohammad Naim, who made 26 off 28 balls. The half-century was Mushfiqur’s 5th in the format.
