Exactly 11 years ago, current captain of Sri Lanka in the limited-overs format, Upul Tharanga, scored his fifth ODI century against Zimbabwe during the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 at Ahmedabad. His innings guided Sri Lanka to a one-sided victory in the third qualifying match.

Mahela Jayawardene, the then Sri Lanka captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Coming fresh from a century against Bangladesh at Mohali, Tharanga was in mood to let his form drop in the global tournament. Sri Lanka were jostled with the loss of Sanath Jayasuriya (9) and Mahela Jayawardene (4), but, it had no effect on Tharanga.

He went on to score 110 (130) with the help of 13 fours & a six as Sri Lanka piled on 285-7 in 50 overs. Kumar Sangakkara, who came in to bat at No. 4, chipped in with 80 (86) with the help of seven fours. With bowling figures of 10-0-55-2, Tafadzwa Kamungozi was the pick of the Zimbabwean bowlers.

In reply, Zimbabwe never really got their innings going. They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals so much so that they were bundled out on 141 in 42.3 overs. Lasith Malinga was the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka as he picked up 9.3-0-25-3. Muttiah Muralitharan and Dilhara Fernando had also chipped with a couple of wickets apiece.
