On this day in 1986 between India and Pakistan played the Austral-Asia Cup Final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, It is one of the most memorable encounter between fierce rivals India and Pakistan. that winning six by Javed Miandad off the last ball against Chetan Sharma is etched in the minds of all the cricket fans across the world.

The Pakistan scoreboard read 39 for 2 when Javed Miandad came to the crease. By the time Pak’s innings reached the halfway mark, the Boys in Green were already at 110 for 4. Miandad was the lone warrior from Pakistan’s batting order who kept running out of partners.

With just 3 overs to go, Pakistan still needed 31 runs to defeat India. The boys in blue sat comfortably as scoring 31 runs in the final 3 overs is a very difficult task, especially back in those days. Pakistan was able to extract 13 runs in the 48th over as Miandad brought up his hundred with a massive six against Madan Lal. Managing 10 runs in the penultimate over, Pakistan lost  Wasim Akram’s wicket who was run out trying to give the strike to Miandad.

Pakistan had to score Eight runs in the last over. A brilliant save by Roger Binny stopped a certain four restricting Pakistan to a single. Last man, Tauseef Ahmed completed a much needed dangerous single to hand Miandad the strike for the bast ball.

The electric crowd at Sharjah was silenced awaiting the final ball as Miandad took strike. Pakistan needed four runs to win the game. With Pakistan already 9 wickets down, a final wicket would have won the game for India.

Chetan Sharma bowled a full toss and Miandad,  who hit it over midwicket and into the high skies for a six. An ecstatic Miandad ran towards the dressing room, shouting and screaming as the Pakistani supporters invaded the field.

It wouldn’t be wrong to term this match as Miandad vs India. The Pakistani batsmen kept his nerve and brought all his experience to snatch the match away from his team’s arch-rivals.
