Rohit Sharma’s performance in Test cricket has recently sparked considerable debate among Indian cricket fans, especially following his lacklustre showing in the 2024 season. As captain of India, his average of 24.76 in Tests has drawn criticism and initiated retirement speculations, particularly after his underwhelming run in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he managed only 31 runs across three matches, resulting in a disappointing average of 6.20. This significant decline has led many to question his future in this format.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his insights regarding Rohit’s Test career on his YouTube channel, drawing a comparison to Virat Kohli. He pointed out that, despite both being senior players, their Test records differ greatly. Chopra stated that Rohit’s achievements in Tests do not match Kohli’s.

“Rohit’s Test career is not as glorious as Virat’s. Virat has played 123 Tests, whereas Rohit has played only 67,” Aakash Chopra remarked, highlighting the disparity in their career lengths and impact. “Rohit has scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57 in 116 innings across those 67 Tests, while Kohli’s average, despite a recent dip, is still around 47,” he added.

Chopra further analyzed the statistics for both players from January 2020 to December 2024. During this timeframe, Rohit participated in 35 matches, while Kohli played in 39. Rohit accumulated 2160 runs at an average of 36, including six centuries, which Chopra described as decent but not extraordinary. In contrast, Kohli’s performance was superior, having played 69 innings during the same period, highlighting the disparity in consistency and influence.

“Rohit didn’t play in 2020, but in 2021, he was exceptional, scoring 906 runs in 11 matches at an average of 47.68 with two centuries,” Aakash Chopra explained. He praised Rohit for his solid performance in 2021, describing it as a “good year.” However, 2022 proved challenging for Rohit, with only two matches played and 90 runs from three innings, highlighting his struggles with injuries.

In 2023, Rohit Sharma appeared to regain his form, scoring 545 runs in eight matches at an average of 41.92, which included another two centuries. Chopra remarked that while 2023 was a relatively good year for Rohit, 2024 has been disappointing. The first half of the year was satisfactory, but the latter half saw a sharp decline as Rohit failed to meet expectations. Chopra concluded by noting that despite his difficulties, Rohit still recorded a respectable total of 619 runs in 14 matches for the year. However, his overall average of 24 in 2024 points to a significant downturn in performance.
