Former India batter Aakash Chopra has voiced his disappointment over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission from India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, suggesting that the young opener has every reason to feel frustrated after consistently delivering when given opportunities.

India are set to face England in a three-match ODI series beginning on July 14 in Birmingham. While Virat Kohli has been included in the squad, subject to fitness clearance, Jaiswal has once again missed out despite impressive performances in the limited opportunities he has received in the format.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said it was difficult not to sympathize with the left-handed batter, who has repeatedly scored runs only to find himself out of the team in the very next series. “You’ve got to feel for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has played very few matches and has scored two centuries. He scored a century in the last match against South Africa and was dropped for the next series,” Chopra said.

“He scored a century in the last match against Afghanistan now and has been dropped for the next series,” he added. Aakash Chopra believes Jaiswal would naturally be questioning what more he needs to do to cement his place in India’s ODI setup. “What more can I do? He will ask that question of himself for sure, but this is what it is,” Chopra remarked.

The former India opener then explained the likely reasons behind the selectors’ decision. According to him, the presence of established players such as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill at the top of the order, along with Ishan Kishan’s versatility, has made it difficult for Jaiswal to secure a permanent spot.

“Shubman Gill is there with Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan provides you with multiple options. He is a keeper, backup middle order, and backup opener as well,” Aakash Chopra explained. “He is one guy who fits everywhere. However, you have got to feel for Yashasvi. He is scoring runs, but his name is still not coming,” he added.

Jaiswal has made a strong start to his ODI career, scoring 285 runs in six matches at an impressive average of 71.25. His latest statement performance came in Chennai, where he smashed an unbeaten 110 off just 86 balls against Afghanistan.

Chopra also highlighted that Kohli’s fitness could still impact the squad composition. “Virat Kohli is subject to fitness. I think he has a fitness test on the 26th. When he clears that fitness test, he will be playing,” Aakash Chopra said. “Otherwise, you might once again see Yashasvi Jaiswal’s name being added to this team,” he added.

The commentator concluded by noting that Jaiswal was only part of the Afghanistan ODI series because Kohli was unavailable, making his latest omission feel particularly harsh despite his excellent performances.
