In the recently concluded season of the IPL 2020, Australia’s limited-overs captain, Aaron Finch played in 12 matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but he only amassed 268 runs at a very ordinary average of 22.33. He scored just a single half-century during the tournament. His uncapped compatriot Joshua Philippe replaced him for few matches but the Australian skipper came back to the playing XI in his side’s Eliminator clash versus Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, Finch failed to score big again and departed for 32.

The addition of the Aussie captain was expected to have an impact on the fortunes of the Bangalore based franchise. Experts and fans had predicted that the inclusion of Finch would take the burden off Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. But Funch’s poor show barred it from happening and RCB kept on relying on the batting prowess of Kohli and de Villiers, whenever in trouble.

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has highlighted the failure of the stalwart opener and called him a huge disappointment for the RCB in the recently-concluded 13th edition of IPL.

In the latest video on his Youtube channel, Chopra was heard saying, “Aaron Finch was the biggest disappointment for RCB this season. They had put huge stakes on him and stuck with him for a long time as well. You expect the Finch hitting from him.”

He further added, “He got a whole lot of chances to bat. Moeen Ali was in and out of the team but Aaron Finch played all the matches, I mean he played 10-12 matches at the start. But the form was not seen at all. But you had more expectations from Aaron Finch. Because imagine if Devdutt Padikkal was playing well from one side and Aaron Finch had been playing well, then the pressure and responsibility would have been less on Virat and AB de Villiers.”

Chopra elaborated, “And you need a Quinton de Kock type of performance or say the KL Rahul or Mayank Agarwal type of performance that suddenly catapults your team to greater heights. But that did not happen with this team. And the main reason for that was the big-stake player who was played, that is Aaron Finch and from RCB’s perspective he was a bit of a disappointment,.”

Aaron Finch will now be leading the Australian side in the limited-overs series against India from November 27.
