Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have emerged as one of the most dominant opening pairs in ODI cricket, providing India with consistency, stability, and explosive starts over the past few years. Their contrasting styles have complemented each other perfectly, making them a vital part of India’s white-ball success.

While Rohit has continued to play his naturally aggressive brand of cricket, taking on bowlers from the outset, Gill has brought balance to the partnership with his composure and ability to anchor innings. Together, they have repeatedly laid strong foundations, allowing India’s middle order to capitalise on favourable situations.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes the duo currently stands as the best opening partnership in ODI cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted their remarkable numbers and noted that their average surpasses several legendary opening combinations of the past.

“Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma’s opening partnership is currently the best in ODI cricket. They have scored over 2,000 runs together and their average is 63.8. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy averaged 58.4, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes 52.6, while Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar averaged 49.3,” Aakash Chopra said.

The former batter also praised the pair’s consistency, noting how frequently they have delivered substantial partnerships for India.

“They have scored 2,360 runs together, registered 14 fifty-plus stands and seven century partnerships. Those numbers tell you everything about their impact. In terms of average and consistency, they are the modern-day benchmark for opening pairs,” he added.

Chopra also reflected on Rohit Sharma’s incredible career achievements and the milestones that continue to come his way. According to him, the Indian captain is still rewriting record books despite being in the latter stages of his international career.

“Rohit Sharma is just six runs away from becoming the first Indian opener to score 16,000 international runs. He is also one century away from moving ahead of Sachin Tendulkar on the list of international hundreds by an opener. At this stage of his career, Rohit keeps creating new records and strengthening his legacy,” Aakash Chopra observed.

The celebrated opening pair is expected to reunite during India’s upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, where they will once again be tasked with providing the strong starts that have become their trademark.
